RS Podcast 009 – “Is Reel Spirituality A Real Spirituality?”

We write a lot on our website about the power of movies in our individual lives and in the greater world. Most of the time, it’s a given that this way to deal with cinema is legitimate, that the movies are a place where one can conceivably encounter God.

On this week’s podcast, we’re featuring a lecture given by Reel Spirituality founder and co-director Rob Johnston at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival in which he considers whether or not what we term “reel spiritualtiy” is an actual form of spirituality, or a “real spirituality” as his clever title says.

Does God really meet people in the theater? Or are people’s expereinces really just the byproduct of big sound systems and overwhleming visuals? Is there any theological support for a cinematic spiritual practice? In what different ways do people meet God at the movies?

On next week’s show, we’ll be returning to our normal format as Reel Spirituality co-director Elijah Davidson is joined by Richard Goodwin once again to explore the trials of adolescence in François Truffaut’s The 400 Blows and Robert Zemeckis’ Back to the Future.

The theme music for our podcast is provided by Matt Lumpkin, aka Bendblock, whose music can be found here. If you are interested in subscribing to the Reel Spirituality podcast, follow this link.
