As we celebrate the semicentennial of Fuller Theological Seminary’s Centro Latino, we thank God for ordering the steps of those who planted and watered in preceding decades. Some names are known to us. Others are known only to God. Our celebrity culture can tempt us to honor only the few with gifts of leadership or financial resources that are easily seen. The character of Latino/a cultures, however, values the many hands that make the load lighter—a lesson many others would do well to learn. We thank God for all of those who have handed us this legacy to steward.
We rejoice in the good work done in years past and being done today. Fuller is blessed by the leadership of Centro Latino dean Rev. Dr. Alexia Salvatierra, and by the faculty, staff, students, and supporters who enrich the work and witness of Fuller locally, regionally, and globally. The historicity of our center, our robust Spanish language collection of texts, our bilinguality, and more enable us to engage from the Latino/a church to the whole church.
The future draws us into challenging and exhilarating times of Christian witness. Some fear the dynamism of diversity that continues to emerge in communities and countries around the world. But we are inspired by embracing and being embraced more substantially by the vibrant variety of God. Centro Latino is an essential leader in the Fuller ecology, as we lean into the future that is coming fast. What a blessing it is to live at the leading edge, to help the church and the world be more of what God wills us
to be.
