It’s going to be hard this fall to talk about politics. It’s going to be hard not to talk about politics. This will challenge, among other things, our manners. Strange as it may sound, we should pay attention to this: history tells us that dominant cultural manners can sometimes be confused as evidence of following Jesus, as though being polite and following Jesus are synonymous. They are not the same thing, however, and nothing reveals this better than politics—except perhaps religion.
