What is there to say about Barbie? It’s a lot of fun, isn’t it? And what it has to say is certainly worth saying. If it’s the kind of sugar that helps the feminism medicine go down for people who would otherwise be resistant to that good medicine, I’m all for it. Greta Gerwig deserves every plaudit and every opportunity that comes her way on the high heels of this film. She’s a marvel. I never like sermons in movies even when I agree with them, and I think I owe it to my readers to be consistent in that. I’m jealous of movie-watchers who don’t have an obligation to be ideologically consistent in their reactions to films. Barbie is great. It’s made many people feel seen. It’s hopefully prompted others to examine their biases. Maybe it ought to make me reconsider my critical ethic. I wish we had more movies like Barbie.

The Dial of Destiny is diverting enough. It’s the best version of an Indiana Jones knock-off, but it’s still a knock-off.
