124 RS Podcast – The Birth of a Nation, TIFF, Spider-Man

On this week’s Reel Spirituality Podcast, we begin our Story and Study segments in earnest by discussing Nate Parker’s conroversial The Birth of a Nation and the superhero film that swung the current slate of comic book adaptations into action, Spider-Man, respectively. Also, in our Sizzle segment, Eugene Suen joins us fresh off the plane from the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival.

Notes:

The audio of President Obama speaking on the Black Lives Matter movement and law enforecement was taken from this video:

The deleted scene from Spider-Man that features the World Trade Centers conspicuously can be seen here:

And here are the two trailers we featured in this episode:

The music on this episode includes clips from Sam Cooke’s “A Change is Gonna Come,” Aretha Franklin’s cover of Cooke’s song, and the Marvel logo score from Spider-Man, which I’m pretty sure was written by Danny Elfman, since he scored that first Spider-Man film.

The theme music for our podcast is provided by Matt Lumpkin, whose music can be found here. If you are interested in subscribing to the Reel Spirituality podcast, follow this link to Apple or follow this link to Stitcher.
